Richter & Phillips Jewelers
Ring Designer
A ring designer where customers build a custom engagement ring option by option, with our front end driving a Threekit 3D preview.

The problem
Richter & Phillips Jewelers wanted customers to be able to design an engagement or wedding ring online, choosing the options themselves, and then hand that design to the store’s jewelers to make.
The client had already signed up for Threekit, a hosted 3D product configurator, to hold and render the ring models.
What I built
I integrated our front end with Threekit:
- A designer with seven option groups: center stone, carat, halo, bands, settings, side stones and metal
- Each choice is sent to Threekit, which updates the 3D preview of the ring
- “Email Me My Design”, “Send a Hint” and “Contact Us” actions that pass the finished design to the customer, their partner or the store
- A separate phone layout that steps through one option group at a time
Hard parts
- Incompatible choices. The interface disables options that are incompatible with the customer’s current selections.
- Mobile interaction. There was no supplied mobile design. I worked out how to make the configuration flow feel good on a phone, with one option group at a time beneath the preview.
- Email integration. At launch, the designer used an email endpoint supplied by another vendor working with Threekit. I built the replacement AJAX endpoint in the WordPress theme using hooks, keeping it within the agency’s existing WordPress stack.
Result
The designer is live on its own site for Richter & Phillips customers.
